As high school and youth football seasons approach, Lincoln-Way West is urging community members to consider officiating as a way to support local sports and address the ongoing shortage of officials across Illinois.

According to the Inter-Athletic Council of Officials (IACO), in partnership with the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), a free six-week online training course is being offered to prepare individuals to officiate high school football games. The class is open to men and women aged 15 and older, including those with no prior experience or up to three years of experience.

Classes will be conducted via Zoom from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning July 8 and running through August 12. New material will be presented weekly, covering game rules, play situations, timing, penalty enforcement, and positioning through presentations and video reviews.

While the training is free, those seeking their first IHSA license will receive a discounted rate of $40. Participants aged 15 or 16 may apply for a limited provisional license. After completion, attendees will be eligible for assignments to officiate games in the 2025 season. "This is more than a chance to get involved—it’s a unique opportunity to give back to the game and help fill a real need," said program organizers.

Registration opens June 18 at www.iaco-official.org. Interested individuals can email sportsofficiating@yahoo.com for more information. Officials with one to three years of experience are also encouraged to attend to refine their skills.

Lincoln-Way West officials hope the program will inspire a new wave of certified referees ready to contribute to the tradition of Friday night lights.
