Lincoln-Way West senior Ava MacFarlane enters her final season as one of the Warriors’ primary singles players, bringing experience, leadership, and a positive outlook to the lineup.
MacFarlane has primarily competed in singles, though she also enjoys doubles competition for its collaborative nature. She credits strong relationships with teammates for helping create a supportive team environment.
“I’m better at singles, but I love doubles,” MacFarlane said. “I like having someone there with me.”
Among her closest teammates are Amber, her longtime warm-up partner, and Caitlin, a friend and classmate who also contributes to team chemistry.
“Amber is my warm-up partner, and she’s a great player and a great friend,” MacFarlane said.
While singles play requires independence and mental toughness, MacFarlane acknowledged the challenges of competing alone on the court, particularly when dealing with mistakes and pressure during matches.
“In singles, all the pressure is on you,” she said. “Last year I got really hard on myself when I made mistakes.”
Heading into the new season, MacFarlane believes she has grown mentally and is determined to maintain a stronger mindset throughout matches.
“I’m coming back with a better attitude and keeping my head up,” she said.
With her experience and leadership, MacFarlane aims to help guide Lincoln-Way West to a successful season while making the most of her final year in the program.
