Boys water polo coach Nick Schaub prepares for the upcoming season

With a new season on the horizon, Lincoln-Way West boys’ water polo head coach Nick Schaub is preparing his team for competition. With a mix of experienced and younger players, Schaub emphasizes leadership, team chemistry, and improving movement in the water.

Schaub’s coaching career began when Lincoln-Way North required an assistant coach, and his brother-in-law asked him to step in. Over time, he developed a passion for the sport, which led him to coach multiple teams, including wrestling and football. His motivation remains consistent across all sports: helping athletes push beyond their limits and grow both as competitors and individuals.

“This season, we have a solid mix of younger and older players,” Schaub said. “The team has stepped up in leadership, and I’m excited to see how they come together and compete.”

According to Schaub, one major focus this year is improving movement in the water, especially on offense. The team is working to avoid stagnation and create more dynamic plays. Defensively, they plan to press harder and challenge opponents more aggressively.

Several key players will be instrumental in the team’s success. Senior captains Matt Wolf and Jake McCormack provide strong leadership, with McCormack also competing at the national level. Junior Tyler Stasiak is expected to be a major contributor, while left-hander Billy Spee offers unique offensive opportunities. Sophomore Alex Roedl will play a key role, and goalie Luke Dorman is crucial to the team’s defensive strategy.

To build chemistry, the team will undergo “Hell Week,” a grueling first week of practice featuring plate workouts, endurance training, and bleacher conditioning.

“I encourage my athletes to push themselves because growth happens outside of their comfort zones,” Schaub said. “Failure is part of the process, but overcoming adversity makes you stronger.”

With leadership, discipline, and a renewed focus on movement, Lincoln-Way West is ready to make an impact this season.
