Boys water polo stunned by Dolphins in shootout, 17-10

Lincoln-Way West held even early but couldn’t recover after a decisive second-quarter push by Whitney Young, ultimately falling 17–10 in a non-conference matchup.

The matchup saw Lincoln-Way West hold even early before a decisive second-quarter push by Whitney Young created a gap the Warriors could not close. The result marks a setback for Lincoln-Way West as they prepare for upcoming conference play.

The game was played at Whitney Young High School. 

The Warriors came out aggressive, matching the Dolphins goal-for-goal to enter the second quarter in a 3–3 deadlock. While Whitney Young managed to widen the gap with a 6–3 run in the second and another 6–2 stretch in the third, Lincoln-Way West remained resilient, fighting to a 2–2 draw in the final period. The Warriors’ 10-goal performance showed flashes of their high-powered offense, though they finished just shy of their season scoring average of 13 goals per game. Meanwhile, the Dolphins’ offense surged well past their typical 9.2 goals per game average, fueled by a mid-game scoring burst that proved to be the difference-maker. 

Looking ahead, the Lincoln-Way West varsity boys water polo team is poised for an away conference game against Andrew High School on March 24 at 5 p.m. The Warriors will go into the game with an overall record of 3-2, according to MaxPreps. They are headed to a familiar venue where they lost 13-10 to Andrew Thunderbolts in a playoff game on May 16, 2025. The Lincoln-Way West water polo boys may be going to the same place, but they aim for a different result this time.

Lincoln Way West serves grades nine through twelve and had an enrollment of 1,941 students during the 2019-2020 school year. It is located in New Lenox and Will County, according to Illinois Report Card. Out of those enrolled students during that year: grade ten had the highest concentration at 39.4 percent; grade eleven accounted for 36.1 percent; grade twelve made up about thirty-seven percent; and grade nine comprised approximately thirty-six percent of students according to Illinois Report Card.

According to Illinois Report Card, Lincoln Way West’s student body was composed of approximately eighty-one point eight percent white students, one point eight percent black students, twelve point seven percent Hispanic students and one percent Asian students during the same period.
