The Lincoln-Way West boys varsity water polo team encountered a formidable opponent on Tuesday, succumbing to Whitney Young with a score of 14-6 in a non-conference match. This defeat marks the Warriors’ first loss of the season, adjusting their record to 4-1.
According to the team’s performance, junior Tyler Stasiak led the offensive efforts by scoring four out of West’s six goals, effectively penetrating Whitney Young’s robust defensive strategy. Lincoln-Way West commenced the game with vigor, maintaining pace with Whitney Young during the initial minutes. The team executed several crucial saves in the first quarter to avert an early deficit. However, Whitney Young capitalized on fast breaks and forced turnovers, establishing a substantial lead by halftime.
“We knew they were going to push the tempo,” said West head coach Nick Schaub. “Our guys played hard, but we struggled to slow them down in transition, and that made the difference.”
Schaub noted that despite facing challenges, the Warriors exhibited determination and attempted a comeback in the third quarter. Stasiak scored twice more, and another goal was added by the team to reduce the deficit. Nevertheless, Whitney Young’s depth and unyielding defensive pressure were insurmountable.
Despite this setback, Lincoln-Way West remains optimistic about their capabilities. With a 4-1 record, they have demonstrated their competitive edge at a high level. The team intends to leverage this experience as motivation for future games.
“This was a good test for us,” Schaub said. “We’ll learn from it and come back stronger.”
