The Lincoln-Way West boys’ water polo team is emphasizing leadership, accountability, and teamwork this season under the guidance of head coach Nick Schaub and assistant coach Justin Farmer.
According to Schaub, success begins with setting expectations early and fostering a positive team culture. “It starts with the guys next to us,” Schaub said. “They understand the process. You set the tempo right away—what’s acceptable and what’s not. Juniors pick it up, then sophomores, and it becomes a cycle. Positive communication is huge, especially in water polo.”
Farmer highlighted the importance of mental toughness and preparation for the team’s performance. “We prepare these guys mentally for a grind and get them ready to go,” he said.
Senior Jake McCormack underscored the team’s commitment to maintaining a strong mindset throughout the season. “You have to do everything you can for your team to win,” McCormack said. “Every second, you accept what happens—good or bad—and move on to the next play.”
Matt Wolf attributed the team’s growth to its chemistry. “It’s a team sport—no one person can change the outcome alone,” Wolf said. “This season, we’ve been more of a team than ever. Team breakfasts, dinners—we’re a family. The closer we are, the better we play.”
Liam Golub emphasized that effort is crucial regardless of mistakes made during games. “Mistakes don’t matter as long as you put in the effort to do the right thing,” Golub said.
With this strong foundation in place, Lincoln-Way West is prepared for the upcoming season.
