As the Lincoln-Way West girls track and field team prepares for the upcoming season, head coach Dominic Deluca is eager to see his athletes compete and grow.
With over 20 years of coaching experience, Deluca has developed a passion for the sport and a commitment to helping his athletes succeed. He assumed the head coaching role when it became available, and his enthusiasm has only increased since then. According to Deluca, one of his favorite aspects of coaching is watching athletes from various skill levels develop and contribute to the team’s overall success.
“The unique thing about track and field is that everyone competes together, regardless of experience,” Deluca said. “It’s rewarding to see the progress each athlete makes throughout the season.”
This season, according to Deluca, the program is introducing more meets to provide additional competitive opportunities. He also expects a strong start with an influx of younger athletes who bring new energy and potential to the team. The additional meets will give athletes more opportunities to refine their skills and track progress over the course of the season.
Several key athletes are expected to make an impact this season. Senior Alanah Smith, a standout sprinter, qualified for state in the 200-meter race as a sophomore and placed in the event. She remains a cornerstone of the team and is poised for another strong season. Reese Geiger, a senior and returning state qualifier in pole vault, has established herself as a leader and top competitor.
Developing team chemistry remains a priority for Deluca, especially with a mix of freshmen and seniors on the squad. “The key is being there for each other, whether in practice or at meets,” he said. “Encouragement and accountability go a long way in building a strong team.”
