The Lincoln-Way West varsity girls volleyball team kicked off the Autumn Knights tournament on a tough note, suffering a disappointing loss in their first match on Oct. 16th. 

Caroline Smith stood out as a bright spot, leading the team with an impressive 8 kills, while Laney Tuttle showcased her defensive skills, racking up 9 digs to pace the squad. 

Despite the setback, the team remained optimistic about their chances to bounce back in the competition.

LWW failed to bounce back in the second match of the tournament as they suffered a tough loss against Homewood-Flossmoor, falling in two closely contested sets with scores of 22-25 and 19-25.

Lily Goyer led the charge with an impressive 8 kills, showcasing her strong attacking skills. Smith was hot on her heels, contributing 6 crucial kills to the team’s effort. Notably, Smith also delivered 3 aces throughout the match, demonstrating her versatility and serving prowess. Despite the loss, the team’s fighting spirit and determination were on full display.

The girls bounced back in winning fashion in their next match in the tournament as they earned a hard-fought win against Plainfield South, capturing the match in three thrilling sets. 

Despite stumbling in the first set with a 19-25 loss, the team bounced back with authority, taking the second set 25-14. 

The third set was a tense, back-and-forth battle, with the team emerging victorious 16-14. 

Claire Murphy orchestrated the team’s offense with precision, tallying 31 assists to facilitate her teammates’ scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Elly Decker’s impressive 15 kills provided the team with crucial momentum swings throughout the contest.

Lincoln Way West defeated their cross town rival Lincoln Way Central 2-1 in the following match of the tournament, marking their second straight victory in a row. 

LWW varsity superstar Laney Tuttle’s standout performance earned her all-tournament accolades, as she led the defense with 26 digs. 

The match itself was a closely contested affair, featuring set scores of 25-27, 25-21, and a heart-stopping 17-16 in the third set, which saw the team display remarkable grit and tenacity to emerge victorious.

The girls team’s winning streak continued as they defeated Joliet West in a convincing two-set victory. 

Star player Smith delivered 4 aces and 11 kills, showcasing her impressive all-around skills. Decker chipped in with 6 kills, complementing Smith’s efforts. On the defensive front, Tuttle stood out with 20 digs, displaying exceptional agility and anticipation to disrupt Joliet West’s offense.

In a thrilling three-set match, the varsity volleyball team triumphed over Romeoville in the final match of the tournament, displaying remarkable skill and teamwork. 

The scores reflected the team’s determination, with a 25-15 win in the first set, a hard-fought 20-25 loss in the second, and a decisive 15-10 victory in the third. 

Star player Goyer led the offense with 11 kills, while Laney Tuttle’s defensive expertise earned her 16 digs. The team’s ability to adapt and overcome challenges was on full display, making this win a testament to their growing strength and cohesion.
