As the Lincoln-Way West girls’ soccer team prepares for the upcoming season, head coach Joe Stephens is eager to see his players develop.
According to Stephens, with an expanded roster and strong senior leadership, this year offers a chance for the Warriors to build a more balanced and competitive squad. Stephens began his coaching career while student teaching with Jeff Beast, who invited him to assist with the soccer program. He quickly realized the impact he could have on young athletes and embraced the opportunity to guide them. “This year, we have 25 girls coming out to play, which is a big improvement,” Stephens said. “With 13 seniors leading the way, we’ll have strong leadership to help the younger players adjust.”
One of the team’s primary goals this season is improving ball possession. Last year, according to Stephens, the Warriors relied too much on a few dominant players, which hurt them when injuries occurred. With seven players sidelined due to leg and foot injuries, depth and player health are key priorities in 2024. Several returning players will be instrumental in the team’s success. Third-year varsity player Ava Bach is a respected leader, while Quinn Beebe’s ball-handling skills make her a key playmaker. Kate Kinsella and Kirsten White provide experience and consistency, and Molly Gillis is expected to be another major contributor.
Team chemistry will also be a focus, with captains leading film sessions, icebreakers, and bonding activities to integrate younger players. “I always tell my players to focus on the journey rather than just results,” Stephens said. “Winning is great, but learning from every experience is what truly matters.” With depth, leadership, and a renewed emphasis on teamwork, according to Stephens, the Warriors are ready to compete this season.
