The Lincoln-Way West girls’ water polo team is aiming for a comeback after two seasons of falling short in the sectional quarterfinals. The team, led by a strong senior class, is determined to return to prominence.

“We haven’t done as well as we’d hoped these last couple years,” said senior Joey Roedl. “But the biggest lesson I’ve learned is how to fail and grow with my teammates through it. Just be confident in how you play. Do it for your team.”

According to Roedl, the Warriors are returning with renewed purpose, featuring eight seniors on their roster. Among them are Roedl, a notable field player with club polo experience, and Grace Brown, who is now in her first full season as the starting goalie.

“My biggest goal is to grow with my team and try to be the biggest leader I can,” Brown said. “I want to set a good example so the younger girls can learn from me when I leave.”

Brown has taken on the starting goalie role after gaining experience in previous seasons. Her leadership and communication have been pivotal in organizing the defense and initiating offensive transitions.

“My favorite memory was playing in the sectional championship at Homewood-Flossmoor my freshman year,” Brown added. “That atmosphere is something I’ve been chasing ever since. That’s what I want to get back to this year.”

Head coach Eric Plavlacka expressed confidence in his team’s potential for a deeper run this season. “Our true goal is to be in the sectional championship game this year and play for a shot at state,” he said.

With an experienced group eager for success, the Warriors are prepared to fight their way back into contention.
