Lincoln-Way West boys’ basketball team is set to enter the upcoming season with a clear sense of direction and steady improvement under head coach Tanner Mitchell. The program’s history reflects resilience through changing eras.
After compiling a 14-17 record last winter, the Warriors are determined to continue their upward trend as they approach their 17th season as a program. Key returning players anchor the roster, providing experience and leadership. Seniors Ethan Swanson (small forward, 6’0″), Luke Gouty (power forward/small forward, 6’4″), Vincent Lazzari (small forward, 6’1″), Drake Been (shooting guard, 6’0″), Frank Gainer (point guard/shooting guard, 5’11”), Caden Hammer (small forward, 6’1″) and Colin Lea (shooting guard, 6’0″) return alongside junior Nick Brzezniak (6’5″). This core offers size, versatility, and scoring balance, giving the Warriors a competitive edge heading into conference play.
According to Mitchell, the Warriors’ trajectory has strengthened in recent years. He has guided the team to a 53-73 mark across four seasons — the highest winning percentage of any multi-year coach in program history. Lincoln-Way West has shown flashes of strong defensive identity and improved perimeter scoring, key components that the staff expects to further develop this year.
With a blend of veteran leadership, depth across multiple positions, and a commitment to execution on both ends of the court, Lincoln-Way West enters the season poised to push deeper into conference play and build on the program’s total of 149 wins.
