Lincoln-Way West extended its winning streak to three games on Friday night, securing a 17-7 victory over Andrew in the Southwest Valley Red opener.
According to quarterback Grant Tustin, despite remaining unbeaten with a 3-0 record, he expressed to his teammates that more is expected from them. Tustin admitted he addressed the group during the game. “Sometimes you have to be a little honest with the guys,” Tustin said. “We played the game we didn’t want to play. It was really subpar for us. We cannot regress. Regressing is absolutely detrimental to a football team.”
Wide receiver and defensive back Chase Markowicz acknowledged his appreciation for Tustin’s straightforwardness. “He tells us the truth,” Markowicz said. “If we (stink), he’s going to tell us we (stink).”
Even in what was described as a “subpar” performance by Tustin, Lincoln-Way West’s defense managed to limit Andrew, now holding a 1-2 record, to just one touchdown while making crucial stops late in the game. The offense provided sufficient support, with Tustin demonstrating steady leadership and executing timely plays throughout both halves.
Lincoln-Way West will now shift its focus to their upcoming match against rival Lincoln-Way Central on Friday night as they aim to maintain their perfect season.
