Lincoln-Way West announced the addition of girls flag football as a varsity fall sport, expanding athletic opportunities for female student-athletes and continuing the growth of the school’s athletic offerings.
The announcement was made Jan. 20 by the Lincoln-Way West athletic department.
The new program will begin competition next fall and will join a growing number of Illinois high schools sponsoring girls flag football as an interscholastic sport. The addition reflects the rapid growth of the game at the high school level and provides another competitive pathway for student-athletes, emphasizing speed, skill, teamwork and leadership in a fast-paced format.
Sophomore Kayla Kerner played a key role in helping bring the program to Lincoln-Way West through her advocacy and leadership. Her efforts in organizing interest, communicating with administrators and promoting the sport helped turn the idea into a reality, laying the groundwork for the Warriors’ newest athletic program. The initiative highlighted strong student involvement and demonstrated the impact of athlete-driven leadership within the school community.
With girls flag football set to join the fall lineup, Lincoln-Way West continues to expand its commitment to inclusivity and opportunity, adding another platform for student-athletes to compete, develop and represent the Warriors in a rapidly growing sport across the state.
