With the track and field season approaching, Lincoln-Way West boys’ head coach Joseph Strain is eager to see his team compete at a high level.
According to Strain, “I’ve always loved the track and field community. It’s a unique sport that celebrates both team achievements and individual accomplishments.” This year, Lincoln-Way West boasts strong talent across multiple events, including a top-tier 4×200 relay team and standout performances in pole vault and hurdles. Some distance runners are already clocking sub-5-minute times, setting the stage for an exciting season.
Strain is especially motivated by the opportunity to mentor young athletes. He said, “Coaching allows me to connect with the kids in a meaningful way. It’s rewarding to see them grow, not just as athletes, but as individuals.” Compared to last season, Strain expects improvement across all events. The hurdles and relays are projected to be particularly strong, with a focus on developing the 400-meter runners.
Several athletes to watch this season include sophomore Austin Rowswell, the team’s fastest runner; Joshua Veldman in sprints; and pole vaulter Ryan Stiglic, who continues to improve. Beyond competition, Strain emphasizes discipline and teamwork. “We don’t do things without intention,” he said. “We avoid going through the motions and focus on synergy—when one teammate succeeds, it pushes the entire team forward.”
The Warriors are also building strong team chemistry. A recent social media post featuring their 4×400 relay went viral, highlighting the team’s energy and camaraderie. Additionally, Lincoln-Way West recently broke its school record in the 4×200 relay, a testament to the hard work and unity driving the team this season. With momentum on their side, the Warriors are poised for a standout year on the track.
