Lincoln-Way West (LWW) rebounded from a recent loss to Argo with a strong second-half performance, defeating Stagg 58-38 in a crucial conference matchup. The Warriors, now holding a 9-9 overall record and 3-4 in conference play, improved their standing after a narrow 64-60 defeat to Argo in their previous game.
According to the game’s first half report, Lincoln-Way West led 29-19 at halftime. In the second half, the Warriors increased their intensity on both ends of the court, securing a 20-point victory. Lincoln-Way West head coach Tanner Mitchell emphasized his team’s defensive performance as key to the win. “Defense was the difference,” Mitchell said. “We turned them over, got some easy transition points, and made some free throws. Offensively, we moved the ball well, found success inside, and stretched their defense out.”
Mitchell also spoke about the team’s preparation heading into the game, stressing the importance of not underestimating Stagg despite their winless season. “We knew they were going to play hard,” he said. “We told our players to focus on being physical and matching their intensity. Stagg’s always tough to play against.”
Senior guard Max Gabriel and senior forward John Schwerha were standout performers for the Warriors. Gabriel finished with 13 points and two assists, while Schwerha added nine points and three assists. Gabriel noted that “our defense really sparked the offense today,” adding that they secured many steals and easy layups.
Schwerha expressed satisfaction with his performance, particularly regarding making smart decisions on the court. “I’ve been focusing on playing hard and making the right plays,” he said. “Today, I just tried to leave it all out there.”
With this victory, Lincoln-Way West aims to build momentum as they continue their season. The Warriors will next face Lincoln-Way Central on Friday with hopes of maintaining their winning streak. Mitchell remarked that “we’ve been working hard, and this win is a step in the right direction.” He emphasized that they must keep improving and stay focused on minor details.
