Game Notes:

Sandburg returns its top three offensive weapons. Senior QB Anthony Shelton had 20 touchdown passes and just two interceptions as a junior. Junior RB Luke Bashiorka ran for 1,066 yards and six touchdowns and senior wide receiver Charlie Snoreck had 67 catches for 979 yards and nine touchdowns.

Sandburg senior QB Anthony Shelton is a three-year starter who took over in game two of the 2022 season, his sophomore year, after then-senior starter Christian Evans tore his ACL.

The Warriors are 3-1 versus Sandburg all-time. They have outscored the Eagles 87-51 in four meetings.

Sandburg OT Matt Marek committed to Indiana in June. He held scholarship offers from Akron, Toledo, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, Ball State, Bowling Green and Coastal Carolina.

Sandburg Coach Troy McAllister coached previously for 11 years at Chicago Phillips, compiling a 94-28 record and winning the 4A state title in 2015. He remains the only CPS football coach in history to win a state football title. McAllister left for Sandburg in 2021.

Sandburg assistant coach Michael Schofieldwho went to Michigan and enjoyed a 10-year NFL career before retiring after the 2023 season,Schofield, who won a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos in 2016

Few could have guessed when Marek walked through Sandburg’s doors as a freshman that he would be leaving with a football scholarship to a Big Ten school.

Even though his dad, David, played football for Oak Lawn, Matt didn’t take up the sport until he got to Sandburg. He played baseball and basketball in grade school.

Marek thought he would make a pretty good tight end, but the Sandburg coaches scratched that idea and put him on the line as a guard for the sophomore team. He then took some lumps on varsity as a sophomore but has been stellar ever since.

Offensive leaders: Anthony Shelton, senior, quarterback; Charlie Snoreck, senior, wide receiver, Luke Basiorka, junior, running back; Matt Marek, senior, offensive lineman.

Defensive leaders: Jaden Weaver, junior, defensive end; Ryan Ward, senior, safety; Evan Benos, senior, defensive tackle; Will Whittam, senior, linebacker.

X-factor: Quinn Durkin, sophomore, running back/defensive back.
