Glenbard South clinches share of Upstate Eight with 47-14 win over Elgin

Bob Martin | Oct 22, 2023

Glenbard South (8-1, 8-1) relied heavily on their running game, scoring five rushing touchdowns in a 47-14 conference win over Elgin (1-8, 1-8) to clinch a share of the Upstate Eight title.

The Raiders took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with touchdown runs of 10 yards by Michael Champagne and one yard by Jack Anderson. Jacob Garbett knocked both extra points through the uprights to take the 14 point lead.

The scoring continued in the second quarter, with Champagne taking off for a 57-yard touchdown run. Cam Williams scored on a huge 64-yard end around where he reached the end zone untouched, and then Champagne connected with Williams for 26 yards to go up 35-0. Garbett hit each of the extra points.

In the third quarter the Raiders went up 41-0 on a Shaun Aderholt six-yard touchdown run. Elgin recovered a fumble and took it for a score to make it a 41-7 game, but the Raiders responded with a touchdown on a fumble recovery by Zane Damania. Elgin hit a 23-yard field goal, but the Raiders held on the rest of the way for the win.

Champagne was 4-for-8 for 55 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also had a pair of rushing touchdowns, and had five carries for 86 yards to lead the rushing attack. Carter London ran 10 times for 59 yards and Tawain Davis carried the ball six times for 34 yards. The Raiders had 248 total rushing yards.

Williams caught two passes for 40 yards and a touchdown. His 26-yard touchdown reception was a perfect corner route where he was wide open for the score. The high end recruit who will be at Notre Dame next year also had a 64-yard rushing touchdown. He nearly had a 60 yard punt return for a touchdown, but a flag was thrown on the play and the score was nullified.

London had three catches for 21 yards and Baldouf caught a five yard pass.

On defense, Zach Hyzy recorded eight tackles with two for a loss. Frank Felman had a sack and a tackle for a loss in the win. Tommy Burke and Williams each had an interception, while Damania recovered a fumble and took it for a score.

No. 7 Glenbard South will host No. 10 Noble/UIC on Friday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Class 5A IHSA football playoffs.
