The LWW boys golf team made school history this week when it won the Schuman Cup for the first time with a team score of 151 on the front nine of The Sanctuary golf club.
The Schuman Cup is one of the highlights of the golf season as it unites the Lincoln-Way golf community in a contest between Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way West.
The teams meet annually at the end of the high school golf season to not only compete, but to honor the life of former Lincoln-Way Central golfer, Tommy Schuman. Tommy was supposed to graduate with his senior class in the Spring of 2012, but he suddenly passed away on March 31, 2012. Tommy was an intense competitor, displayed honorable sportsmanship, and was the kind of student-athlete anyone would want as a teammate.
Shortly after his passing, Tommy's parents, Dan and Lynn Schuman, started the Tommy Schuman Foundation, which supports through yearly donations to research at the Sudden Death Clinic at Mayo Clinic, Parent Heart Watch (an organization founded to promote awareness of sudden deaths in youth), and SADS (Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome) Foundation which promotes awareness and assists to advance research.
The Schuman Cup began as a boys competition during the 2014 season and girls were added in 2021. Members of Tommy's family speak annually to the competitors before the golf begins, highlighting Tommy's impact on others during his life and to the truer purposes of being a high school student athlete- rising to the occasion in big moments, but more importantly, to positively impact those around you.
Junior Colin Ladd shot a 36 from the No. 6 seed position to lead the Warriors. He finished second overall. Fellow junior EJ Dwyer was just a stroke behind with a round of 37, which was good for third place overall.
Charlie Stream, Liam Wills, and Logan Knedlik each recorded rounds of 39. William Hoffman and Christopher George shot rounds of 40. Drake Been rounded out LWW's scoring with a round of 42.
Lincoln-Way East was second, three strokes behind the Warriors. Lincoln-Way Central came in third, just five strokes behind.
They boys are heating up at the right time of the season with Regionals upcoming.
