Lincoln-Way West High School standout Conor Essenburg was the sole player from his school selected in the 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. He was chosen in the fifth round on Monday by the Atlanta Braves.
According to reports, Essenburg, a versatile two-way player, was taken 157th overall following an impressive senior season. His performance highlighted his prowess both as a pitcher and a batter. The left-handed pitcher and outfielder achieved a 0.94 earned run average (ERA) with 94 strikeouts over 44⅔ innings. On offense, he maintained a batting average of .464, hitting 10 home runs and securing 49 runs batted in (RBIs).
Essenburg had initially committed to the University of Kentucky but has decided to pursue a professional career instead. "He’s one of the most complete players to come through our program," said a representative from Lincoln-Way West High School. "We’re incredibly proud."
Essenburg's selection continues Lincoln-Way West's tradition of nurturing elite-level talent, even though few make it to professional leagues. The Braves plan to develop Essenburg as both a pitcher and hitter, highlighting his exceptional versatility and athletic ability.
